Black bears and circuits have nothing in common
A few random things in this post, because I can!
Firstly, my dad and I went to walk the dog in a park and below is a picture of a “cute” black mother bear and her cubs that we came across. Now, they are only cute because the photo is zoomed and the actual distance between us and the bear was bigger, not to mention that the bear is busy shielding her children, rather than chasing after us. I would not have even noticed the family as I was chatting with dad, trying to hold on to the dog who clearly wanted to climb up the hill, for whichever reason she always wants to climb any hill. First thing dad said was “ok, let’s slowly walk…”, and then “never mind, let’s just quickly walk back!”. I agree, I was not curios to find out whether papa bear was somewhere in the area. Still, you have to agree, in this photos the bears look cute!
In other recent news, since my laptop started to overheat again I figured it was time to fix the heat sink. After some quick gaging I noticed that my CPU temperature was always 20 degrees higher than the sink, suggestion that heat transfer wasn’t happening. After a quick Google search I came across a few people suggesting that re-applying the heat-past fixes the issues. Indeed, it did! My Mackbook Pro now runs at below 60 degrees even during high loads (videos, parallels, math-crunching…etc). The fun part of the fixing was taking apart the entire computer. The cost of repairing a logic board at the Apple store is over a $1,000 and I wanted to be extra careful while unscrewing all the bagillion screws that held everything together. The “better feeling” came after the surgery when I realized I had an extra screw. All is well that ends well, and the computer is back to its self, working like new. Not surprisingly, once the overheating was fixed, any issues with abnormal start, mainly freezing white screen, were fixed. Total cost of repair: 2 hours of my time and $12 for the heat-paste.
