The dark side of friendship
Do you trust your best friends? How much do you trust them? I watched an interesting episode of Law and Order yesterday and it got me thinking. In the story there were two ballet dancers, they claimed to be best friends. One of the girls, let’s call her Alice, jeopardized another girl’s career, call her Kate, because Alice was afraid that Kate would become popular and move on with her life, leaving Alice behind. Precisely, Alice put glass in her friend’s shoe and as a result Kate got seriously injured, giving Alice an opportunity to take care of her, to become ‘better’ friends and to stay together for longer. Sick, isn’t it? Who would do such a crazy thing one might ask? Well, I imagine the screen writers don’t just get their ideas out of mid air.
I trust my friends, and most of us probably do, that’s what makes friends into best friends, right? Your best friends should make choices that are best for you as an individual, and not what’s best for them as your friends, in theory at least. Episodes like these however make me wonder how often similar situations happen in real life, when best friends secretly betray their friends for the benefit of artificially preserving the friendship, in an effort to be less alone. I would speculate that I know at least one person who might have done something of this nature. Do you know anyone like that? … it’s a scary world we live in.
