Pay it forward

April 25th, 2010

I wish I snapped a picture of this. As I was walking through the MedSci building, a few girls wearing skirts and high heals were carrying boxes of foods and drinks up the stairs, probably for some event. Nearby, in fact, within three steps from them, two cops were standing motionless like they weren’t even there, looking all tough and “busy” with their “work”. There is some kind of a celebration taking place in downtown today and there are quite a few officers around monitoring the safety.

When I was growing up, I learned that I should let elderly and women sit on the subway before I do, or to extend a hand to a woman walking down the bus steps, or to say ‘thank you’ and ‘you’re welcome’. I know I am not perfect, but it amazes me how little people in general care about those things nowadays. I would have helped regardless, but it gave me a little bit of a kick when I gave the girls a hand and saw the expression on one of the cop’s faces. It was something like “hm….why didn’t I think of that”. Indeed, why didn’t they think of helping out, something that the police should be there for anyway.
